Reinventing entry-level hiring by matching qualified individuals with employers
The hiring process is difficult and complex for employers and job seekers alike. Recent trends point to two specific challenges that prevent qualified workers from finding the right job. For one, society's emphasis on higher education has resulted in an excess of unfilled positions that do not require a four-year degree. In addition, current job posting websites are great aggregators, but don’t work to match the right jobs with the right applicants.
For a number of years, gravitytank has partnered with leading philanthropies to solve workforce challenges. This project work eventually led to the inception of Skill Scout, an independent company that seeks to bring tangibility and user-centered design to the hiring process.
THE SKILLS GAP: JOBS WITH NO ONE TO FILL THEM
Today’s job market and the infrastructure surrounding it emphasize higher education, leaving out a wide swath of businesses with jobs that do not require a college degree. There are 600,000 unfilled U.S. manufacturing jobs and an extreme lack of applicants with the relevant skills due to a strong decline in vocational education.

DISRUPTING ONLINE JOB BOARDS
Twenty years ago, employers and job seekers pursued efficiency and scale as job postings and resumes were converted from paper to the web through online job boards. Now, a job seeker can see thousands of job openings. Similarly, a single job posting can attract hundreds of applicants. Unfortunately, any job seeker or employer will tell you that the current systems are ineffective; fewer than 15% of people are hired through them. Job boards and applicant tracking systems are weak tools to find qualified candidates who possess the attitude and aptitude for hands-on, skilled positions.
A NEW, OLD WAY TO HIRE
We are honored to be partners with our nation's leading philanthropies to address some of the most intractable challenges in healthcare, education, and the workforce. Leveraging key insight from previous workforce projects with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the latest techniques for lean startups, gravitytank developed Skill Scout. Skill Scout is an online platform that offers a more effective way to hire skilled, entry-level workers focusing on the job skills themselves. A job is now represented through a compelling video demonstrating the job skills required in that role. A job seeker is represented by the tangible job skills they possess. Video is superior to traditional resumes, because it allows employers to see the applicant with their own eyes. Job fairs have been transformed from awkward social gatherings into engaging demonstrations of job skills with a collaborative air.
